The Temple of Literature or National University is the first of its kind in Viet Nam and set up by the Emperor Ly Thanh Tong in 1070. In 1076, Ly Nhan Tong ordered to found the National University behind the Temple of Literature, making it the first academy in Viet Nam at that time
The Temple of Literature , National University is regarded as a gospel of wisdom and education of Vietnam. The place is dedicated to Holy Fairies and Holy Teachers of Confucianism and Scholars of the National University, Teacher Chu Van An , an outstanding master known for his high morale and kindness of Vietnamese education. The compound comprises: The Lake of Literature, University Garden and the Inner Hall. The Temple of Literature – National University was planned of various wings and gate separated by 5 yards. The compound is meant to memorize talents across different examinations as shown on the 82 doctorate stone stelae , In 1484 Emperor Ly Thanh Tong ordered that stelae be erected to record the names, places of birth and achievements of exceptional scholars: 82 of 116 stelae remain standing. Paths lead from the imposing tiered gateway on Quoc Tu Giam Street through formal gardens to the Khue Van pavilion, constructed in 1802.
In 2010, The stelaes ( stone insriptions) were listed as the world's document heritage for research and study.
